Rebozo treatments for pregnancy, birth and closing the bones

A rebozo is a traditional woven south American shawl, which is long enough to wrap around a woman's

body and can be used as an aid to labor, supporting the woman and allowing for rhythmic movements

and positioning with aim of making childbirth easier.

The rebozo shawl acts like an extension of a birth partner's arms. It allows the partner to help support

the laboring woman’s weight so she doesn't have to and can also help adjust the woman into optimum

birth positions.  Wearing a rebozo to lift the abdomen and/or a rebzo massage can also encourage the

baby’s head to become better positioned in the pelvis ready for birth, and this positioning effect by using

rebozo during labour can assist with easing and progressing birth.  It can also be used for pelvic

balancing and closing the pelvic bones after giving birth.  It is a passive rather than active experience

and sessions involve mindfulness that help empower you for the birth of your baby, or after the birth.

Using a rebozo to gentle rock in distinctive rhythms helps to release lower vertebrae and mobilise the

pelvis.  Combined sometimes with gentle abdominal massage it helps remove tension in the uterus and

bladder and the hip bones which take on enormous stresses during pregnancy and childbirth and after.

Releasing the physiological tension also enables trapped energy to escape too, restoring holistic balance

and leaving you feeling ‘whole again’, whilst reconnecting with yourself and promoting a feeling of being

safe, nurtured and cared for. Something many women are very good at providing endlessly to their children but often not investing time in for themselves.  Rebozo treatments therefore make wonderful, personal, and intensely rewarding mum-to-be or new-mum gifts.  Rebozo massage is intensely rewarding.

A session of rebozo massage and wearing is ideal for any pregnant woman if you are simply wanting to support your body better during pregnancy, overdue and getting frustrated with back ache or frustrated waiting for baby to arrive, or if you want to encourage baby into optimal position, or as a comfort measure for yourself, or as an additional mindfulness tool that you can use up to and during birth.  Also ideal after birth, to encourage the pelvic bones to close back to their normal locations and the body as a whole to restore- physically and spiritually.  The aim of closing-the-bones is to allow the body permission to let go of energy held in the hips.  This treatment can be received soon after giving birth and the treatment is most effective when done as a series of treatments.  Closing the bones is a deeply emotionally rewarding experience that also helps prevent long term pelvic instability.

Rebozo for pregnancy and birth

Wearing a rebozo and rebozo massage is ideal for any pregnant woman.  It helps to lift your abdomen and your baby, helping to prevent and relieve back discomfort.  Gently sifting, or jiggling, and rocking the entire abdomen can relax tired ligaments, release lower vertebrae and mobilise the pelvis.  The gentle lifting and jiggling also allows the baby to rotate in pregnancy and the baby’s head to become better positioned in the pelvis ready for birth or during labour, and this positioning effect by using rebozo during labour can assist with helping women relax and easing and progressing birth.

During the treatment you are fully clothed lying on a mat and blanket on the floor, supported with cushions, in a relaxing and restoring environment.

The rebozo shawl acts like an extension of a birth partner's arms. It is useful but not essential for partners to be present during the treatment so that when the time comes, they are able to use some rebozo techniques help support the laboring woman’s weight, so she doesn't have to and can also help adjust the woman into optimum birth positions.

Wearing a rebozo is also something we include as part of a rebozo massage.

It is a passive rather than active experience and sessions involve mindfulness that help empower you for the birth of your baby, or to cope better with pregnancy and birth aches and pains.

Rebozo for closing the bones

Closing the bones is a south American physiological healing ceremony, which was created to nurture the mother after her passage through giving birth, and her journey into motherhood.  It is a celebration, a setting of sacred space, and a way to nurture mother and baby.  The intention is to provide a space as a nurturing and supportive environment in which healing can take place on many levels.

In a nutshell, the mother is relaxed using Rebozo (a Mexican scarf) massage techniques, her womb area and hip bones  massaged and pulled inwards using warming oils to promote healing.  The hips are wrapped tightly and sometimes the whole body too, covering all the chakra points.

There is an energetic and spiritual aspect to the whole treatment, which provides a safe space for the mother to feel nurtured and release emotions associated with the birth and motherhood.  However,  it doesn't have to be a highly spiritual experience if that isn't your thing, or just as spiritual as you prefer it to be or find it to be.  There is a massage element to the treatment which can also depending on your needs, be hands off or on.

A woman’s hips open during the pregnancy, becoming wider and wider, and that after the birth it is paramount to help close them back to their normal width, otherwise mothers can suffer from pelvic instability and energetic imbalance.  The hips support the weight of the spine and head and that they are often the seat of unresolved emotions and trauma.

Traditionally Closing The Bones in Ecuador involves blessing, anointing, massaging and wrapping the mother. There is a calling of her spirit back to herself as she has been a vessel for carrying new life.  She is viewed traditionally as a remarkable Warrior Woman who has stood before the birth altar and and has walked the threshold between worlds. A transformation has begun as the mother embraces new aspects of herself through this rite of passage into new stages of motherhood. The intention is to provide a space as a nurturing and supportive environment in which healing can take place on these many levels.

Our closing the bones ceremonies are provide by by qualified practitioners.  They begin with blessing the mother, then a variety of healing techniques are used involving Rebozo, massage, aromatherapy,, sound healing and body wrapping. Think utter relaxation and escape!

Using a rebozo in specific rhythms your pelvis will be rocked to help release lower vertebrae and re-activate the pelvis.  Combined with gentle abdominal massage the effect is to remove tension in the uterus and bladder and in the hip bones which take on enormous stresses during pregnancy and childbirth and after.  It is thought that the massage stimulates blood flow which in turn is thought to cleans, renew, and moves fluids (possibly including milk supply), moving hormones, immune system, toning muscles and tissue, repositioning the bladder and uterus.

Finally there is a ‘closing’ done, by gently wrapping the midsection and the pelvic area, helping to support the uterus to shrink and guide the pelvic bones back to their original positioning.  Once complete, you are allowed to lie quietly  to absorb your experience and all that your remarkable body has achieved in a relaxing and restoring environment. Think utter relaxation, goodness and escape!

Releasing physiological tension enables trapped energy to escape, restoring holistic balance and leaving you feeling ‘whole again’, whilst reconnecting with yourself and promoting a feeling of being safe, nurtured and cared for : an intensely rewarding experience. Something many women are very good at providing endlessly to their children but often not investing time in for themselves.  It therefore makes for a wonderful, personal, and intensely rewarding new-mum gift.

In Ecuador, women are given this massage very very soon after birth, and receive it again many times in the first 6 weeks after giving birth.  In traditional cultures, the 6 weeks of the postnatal period represents a sacred time.

Our closing of the bones treatments are designed for mothers  (from hours after birth to decades later) who wish to find some physiological and emotional restoration, closure and/or healing for themselves and their body.  Babes in arms are very welcome and often soon after birth are an important addition to the ceremony.

Our closing of the bones treatments can also include luxury rebalancing and restoring body wrap massages and ceremonial belly binding (gently wrapping the head, the midsection and the pelvic area to give a full body wrap), according to your preferences.  The full ceremonial treatment also helps close the new mother energetically, as both pregnancy, and the intense process of birth, can be very impactful times for a woman, psychologically and physically.

It is ideal but certainly not at all essential to have friends/relatives attend the ceremonial belly binding if you choose this option, for a truly complete, holistic, and spiritual experience.

The reason we offer additional luxury body wraps with our closing the bones treatments is because body wraps are well known for stress relieving, detoxing the body, stimulation and increasing circulation, restoring balance and healing, often considered more relaxing and restoring than a massage alone.  Our wraps include massage and don’t require you to shower off products afterwards (in fact the products we use are best left on for optimum effect).

We only use luxury salon quality products from Babor, Voya, Neals Yard and Arbone (all 100% natural ingredients and products and their ingredients are 100% not tested on animals).  Products are suitable for sensitive skin types.

All closing the bones treatments are available at Jude’s home or yours for a small additional fee to cover travel expenses.

Benefits of rebozo closing the bones treatments:

Helps to move the pubic bone, uterus and bladder back to pre-pregnancy position

Releases tension and trapped energy held in the hips

Loosens the lower vertebrae which become compressed during pregnancy

Provides valuable nurturing time and an opportunity to focus inwards and restore balance in mind as much as body

Moves fluids (possibly including milk supply), hormones, immune system, toning muscles and tissue.

Helps promote long term pelvic stability and prevent problems in older age

Inclusion of luxury body wraps promotes stress relieving, detoxing the body, stimulation and increasing circulation, restoring balance and healing

What to expect:

We will discuss together your needs and preferences.  Aromatherapy oils, candles and a salon or holistic style environment are created to uplift emotions and enable the mind to turn inwards and restore.  Luxury creams and body massage will be included if you chose to include a body wrap in your treatment, which will enhance the effects of the rebozo massage itself and really treat your amazing body.  Our wraps don’t require you to shower off products afterwards (in fact the products we use are best left on for optimum effect).

During the closing the bones treatment you are fully clothed lying on a mat and blanket on the floor, supported with cushions (unless you opt for the luxury body wrap addition when you will be enveloped in towels and body areas worked on sensitively and discretely).

"Just had a perinatal rebozo wrap treatment from Jude. It was so relaxing and I felt as though my body had realigned back to how it should be following the birth of my little boy.  The head and neck massage part also really helped to relieve the tension I had in this area. I would thoroughly recommend to any new mum."

"A really luxurious and a much needed indulgent experience.  So good to have my body nurtured and worshiped, have the space to explore my head and reminisce the births of my babies, and receive a great big dollop of 'me time' when lately I've been so focused on 'giving'.  It fed my soul, my feet and heart felt light and restored, I feel truly happy and so content.  It won't be the last time I treat myself to this. ."
